“’Flat Screen’ balances humor and honesty, poking fun at our screen-bound habits while gently reminding us what’s lost when we trade presence for pixels.” – HONK Magazine
I have a confession to make. I’m addicted to my phone. I can spend shocking amounts of time doom scrolling. One rationale is that I too am a content creator and thus must keep current on the latest tweaks to the platforms and see what the competition is up to. Yep!
This is my fifth single of the PeterWilsonWorld album. When it’s time to put out a new single I’ve learned I must sit down and write the story and make a video explaining myself. I’m really enjoying the feedback loop this tune has put me in. Once it’s out on all platforms on Friday, October 3, I might just take John Prine’s advice and blow up my TV and throw away my paper.
I wrote this tune at Troubadour Camp with my pals Moe Dixon and Mountain John Hilligoss. We would spend a week each year at a cabin in the woods of western Pennsylvania coming up with new songs. Whenever there was a break in the musical action we’d each go to our little corners of the cabin and stare at our little personal flat screens. Smart phones were a recent phenomenon at the time. The attention economy hadn’t yet been identified publicly but it was obvious where this was going.
Fun fact! This is the only song ever written with the word “mundane” in it.
