Birthday is a song I wrote in anticipation of a friend’s birthday. I was driving home from a gig in Truckee over Donner Pass on I-80 when I got the idea and wrote the whole song while driving. It was done by the time I got home. I didn’t hit anything. The angels were smiling for me.
In 2023 I spent a month in New Orleans. I would get up early and write songs. My second week at the house in the Bywater I went looking for inspiration from Professor Longhair. Dr. John gave him a lot of credit. I played a few Professor Longhair tracks on Youtube and noticed they were all in the key of G. Good key for me.
In October, 2011 I found myself in cabin in Somerset, Pennsylvania for a week of songwriting with friends. I was promoting concerts in California at the same time so I was working on my computer half the night and hammering out songs all day. Not sleeping a lot… So I wrote this song. Sweet dreams!
