Grateful Woodshed Costa Rica
March 5 @ 8:00 am - March 16 @ 5:00 pm
Collins Dictionary: To Woodshed – verb
…to practice on a musical instrument so as to improve or perfect one’s technical facility, develop ideas, etc.
The Grateful Woodshed is an opportunity to hone music with one-on-one, hands-on songwriting, performing and recording. In this case it’s a 10-minute walk to a long, white sand beach.
Occasionally someone will ask me if I give lessons. Not really. Well… Over the years I’ve taught songwriting and guitar at music camps. I think I learned as much as my students. The part that clicked with me were the one-on-one sessions. If I’m able to find where a musician is, and where they want to go, the next steps can be quick and rewarding. I love seeing the light bulb go on when something needed is offered. YES!
~ SONGWRITING – Got Words? Got Music? Let’s finish a song!
~ GUITAR – Need to up your chops? Let’s work on that!
~ RECORDING – I have a portable multi-track recorder that I love. Let’s lay down some tracks!
~ VIDEO – I have 3 video cameras. Let’s do a multi-camera shoot!

I will be making my performing debut at the Grateful Hotel in Costa Rica for two weeks in March.
The Grateful Hotel is a 10-room boutique Grateful Dead themed hotel in Playa Grande, Costa Rica. They have a highly rated restaurant and Sugaree’s Bar featuring live music (me) Wednesday through Saturday with Sunday Funday jam session/open mic on Sunday afternoons.
In 2023 I stayed in New Orleans for a month. Every morning I’d get up early and “woodshed” songs. I had brought enough gear to make videos and play pick-up gigs. Here’s some examples of music I put together during my “NOLA Woodshed.”

Here’s one more – a pick-up gig I got sitting in with the amazing John Fohl at Dos Jefes Uptown Cigar Bar, New Orleans.
